A FRENCH BAROQUE STYLE GILTWOOD CONSOLE TABLE, EARLY 19TH CENTURY

A FRENCH BAROQUE STYLE GILTWOOD CONSOLE TABLE, EARLY 19TH CENTURY, with a white marble top, painted to simulate Sienna marble, over four tapering scroll legs on block and plinth feet, the two back legs facing sideways; the legs are all carved with acanthus and a fully modelled child's head surmounts the front legs, the back legs are surmounted by a fluted architrave; the pierced apron with central Rococo shield with fish scales, flowers and escallop to base, flanked by cornucopias (horns of plenty) issuing flowers and fruit which curl upwards into the frieze; the frieze is decorated with fluting and egg and dart moulding with acanthus carving at the corners.

90cm high x 142cm wide x 57cm deep

Provenance: From a collection of furniture and antiques left to the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB ) in 1939 by Evelyn Stannus of Kensington. Items in the collection are believed to have come from Ireland. Since 1939 many objects from the collection have been on loan to the National Trust and this item has been displayed at Lyme Park.
