Guan Liang, born in 1900 in Guangdong province, is a highly-regarded artist of the 20th century, known primarily for his works depicting figures from Peking opera. He trained as an oil painter under the tutelage of Fujishima Takeji in Tokyo, and subsequently returned to China in 1922 and taught at both the Shanghai Fine Arts School and the National Academy of Art in Hangzhou. Although Guan began his career as an oil painter, he later focused on traditional Chinese ink wash painting that featured characters from Peking operas. He is considered one of the first artists to introduce Western painting techniques to traditional ink wash painting.
