Label on the reverse reads 'Justinian Gantz (1802-1862) was the eldest son of John Gantz. He is described in the 'East India Register' as a 'Miniature Painter'. He helped his father with the amily's lithograph press. Later he spent some years in Burma as a draftsman for the East India Company, but he died at Madras.'

PROVENANCE:
From the collection of Augustus Fletcher (1928-2020), thence by descent.
From 1948 to 1958 Gus Fletcher served in the Colonial Police in Malaya, and latterly was Assistant Superintendent of Police and Area Special Branch Officer in the Kuala Pilau and Bahau Police Districts of Negri Sembilan. He was awarded the George Medal in 1957 after a combined police and military operation code-named “Googly” during the Malayan Emergency. He later served the British Government in Hong Kong and New Delhi.
