AN EARLY MEDIEVAL CARVED STONE MORTAR OR VESSEL DECORATED WITH GROTESQUES, probably 12th-14th century French, of tapering cylindrical form, the body carved with four crouching figures, comprising two female each flanked by a bearded male, the human figures interspersed with four masks comprising two in the form of beasts, probably lions, each flanked by those in form of bearded men, the top and base rim with linear ribbed hatching, 9.5cm high, 11.5cm wide
