NOTE:
The figurative imagery, likely drawing inspiration from a literary source, the use of vivid red, green and yellow enamels, and the slightly thicker, rounded footrim, all combine to make this an attractive example of the wares typical of the late Transitional Period. Ceramics making use of comparable aesthetics are illustrated in T. Canepa and K. Butler, 'Leaping the Dragon Gate - The Sir Michael Butler Collection of Seventeenth-Century Chinese Porcelain', 2021. Also see two dishes decorated with literary scenes and dated to the Shunzhi Period, both from the Butler Collection, sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 30th Nov 2023, lots 3029 & 3035.
