Lars Christian Henrichsen (1839-1904)

PORTLAND OREGON FROM HEIGHTS WEST OF THE CITY LOOKING EAST. Fourteen-part silver gelatin print panorama, each print measuring approx. 180 x 230mm and mounted to thick card, with linen joints folded concertina-style and handsomely bound in gilt-lettered red cloth. Each page numbered, with photographer's credit and date in the negative of plate 14, with title printed under central two plates, overall binding measuring 250 x 240mm.

Described by the Sunday Oregonian in 1922 as a pioneer of Portland's jewellery business, Lars Christian Henrichsen was also an accomplished photographer who self-published this volume in 1903. Henrichsen travelled to the United States in 1861, and settled in Portland, Oregon, where he became a member of the Oregon Camera Club. He photographed his adopted city extensively, documenting the growth and expansion of the city around the turn of the century, including the industrial growth that is evident in this volume, which features the busy waterfront of the Willamette River throughout. Today, the Oregon Historical Society holds his collection, which includes 225 glass plate negative photographs taken by or attributed to LC Henrichsen between 1895 and 1910, including the original negatives for this 1903 panorama.
