A PEDANG BENGKOK SWORD WITH CARVED BUFFALO HORN HILT AND CHASED SILVER SCABBARD

With a tapering curved (bengkok in Indonesian) single-edged steel blade, the thick spine flattened for 2/3 of the full length, the grip and scabbard covered in beaten and chased solid silver sheet enhanced with typical Indonesian decorative patterns including stylised palmettes, chequered grids, lobed arches and fleshy foliate trellis, the Javi inscription at the top of the scabbard bearing a later-added numeral and date 28 : 1112 AH (1701 AD), the flamboyant horn pommel intricately carved as thick foliage, 80cm long including the scabbard.
