A CHINESE SILK EMBROIDERED 'DRUNKEN CONCUBINE' COSTUME

20th / 21st century

《貴妃醉酒》京劇戲服

Comprising a jacket decorated with quatrefoil ruyi-head medallions and cartouches enclosing flowerheads on a red ground, the sleeves terminating with horizontal bands of dark-blue, peach, teal, lemon-yellow, light-green and pale-violet decorated with lotus and prunus flowers above bands of ruyi heads worked in gilt-thread, the waist with a similar design on a blue ground and set with cloud-form flaps decorated with lotus and gilt-thread ruyi heads, together with a shoulder 'cloud cape' decorated with lotus and prunus issuing from scrolling stems on a yellow ground terminating in ruyi heads, the blue-ground outer border set with a fringe, the skirt with a central flap embroidered with a polychrome phoenix flying over cresting gilt waves, with several slender flaps in two layers, all decorated with red and violet flowerheads,

Kathy Hall 李惠馨 (Churchill Fellow, 2004) is an experienced arts administrator, promoter, presenter, teacher and practitioner of Jingju (京劇 Peking Opera) and Kunqu Opera (崑曲) in London. She is known for her work UK-wide with the former London Jing Kun Opera Association (2002-2014).

Note: This costume was created for the opera Guifei Zuijiu, which tells the story of Yang Guifei, the beloved consort of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang during his later years.
