Follower of William Hogarth (British 1697-1764)
Portrait of a gentleman, traditionally identified as a portrait of John Thornhill, Hogarth's brother-in-law
inscribed on a label attached to the backboard in the hand of Leonard Gordon Duke, W. Hogarth 1697-1764 / c. 1730 R.B. Beckett suggests that this may possibly be a portrait of the artist's brother-in-law John Thornhill, Serjeant Painter to George II & son of Sir James Thornhill, whose daughter Hogarth married. John Thornhill died 1759. LGD
