SIR THOMAS LAWRENCE (BRITISH 1769-1830) Study from Nature: The Source of the Manifold at Ilam Park Oil on paper 11.1 x 17cm (4 1/4 x 6 3/4in) unframed The present oil sketch relates closely to the pair of rare landscape studies sold at Christie's New York, April 13th 2016, Lot 15 Studies from Nature: The Source of the Manifold at Ilam Park; and A View of Dovedale looking towards Thorpe Cloud. They are the only known pure landscapes by Lawrence, painted early in his career around 1790. In particular, this sketch shows close similarities with the details in the study titled,The Source of the Manifold at Ilam Park. It is thought that the landscapes were painted at Ilam Hall, Derbyshire when Lawrence was painting the Watts Russell family in about 1790.
