A George III Irish sterling silver sauceboat, Dublin 1787 by Matthew West
of bellied form upon three pad feet with shell junctions with chased surrounds, a triple C scroll handle leading to a beaded rim. The body with contemporaneous embossed decoration of C scrolls and foliage, with rocaille. The underside of the lip with an embossed acanthus C scroll cartouche engraved with a crest of out of a ducal coronet a cubit arm holding three ears of wheat. Fully marked underneath.

Matthew West was apprenticed to John West in 1762, elected Warden 1780-83, master 1783-4 and elected common council city of Dublin 1783, 1789, 1795 and 1801. Worked from Werburgh street 1774-83.
