Browning (Robert)
Autograph letter signed ('Robert Browning') to Mrs Pender, reading "I should greatly enjoy the great pleasure you so kindly propose, were it not that I am engaged to be present at the Farewell Benefit of the Bancrofts, friends of mine, which takes place on the 22nd. I can only thank you - and thank Mr Pender - extremely", one page, integral blank, occasional foxing but handwriting remains clear and legible, 8vo, 19 Warwick Crescent, 4 July 1885.
The recipient of the letter is Emma Pender, second wife of John Pender (1816-1896), Scottish textile merchant in Manchester, submarine communications cable pioneer and politician. The Bancrofts mentioned in the letter are Squire Bancroft and his wife Effie, leading actors and theatre managers at the Prince of Wales and the Haymarket. 1885 was the year they retired from management.
