A KALAMKARI BOCCHA AND A HANGING
Iran, early 20th century
Comprising a boccha of square format, the white cotton ground printed with alternating narrow and broad stripes containing floral meanders in indigo, madder red, and ochre, the border of sinuous ‘armband’ design of the same colours framed by two narrow outer borders, edged with bias-cut striped cotton of blue, white, yellow, and red, lined in red cotton, the side border stamped Ghalam Kar Sad Ras A’la Haj Taleb (?), 105cm x 104cm; and a smaller hanging, of rectangular form, the polylobed central floral motif in reserve, printed in blue and red, the red field with repeating rows of alternating small buti, the chevron borders within floral outer borders, horizontal edges hand-hemmed, 140cm x 110cm.
