A George III sterling silver sugar caster, London 1778 by Samuel Wood (first reg. 3rd July 1733)

of baluster form upon spreading circular foot. The domed pull off lid with pierced decoration of scrolls and repeating motifs heightened with engraved bands, surmounted by an urn finial. Later engraved to the side with a crest of a lion passant. Fully marked underneath, the lid marked with makers mark and lion passant only to the bezel.

Height – 17.4 cm / 6.8 inches

Weight – 173 grams / 5.56 ozt

Samuel Wood (1703/04 – 1790) was the most prolific caster maker of the 18th century, he was apprenticed to Thomas Bamford on the 7th June 1721.
