SILVER CYLINDER POCKET WATCH.

AN 1885-CYLINDER SILVER PAIR CASE POCKET WATCH WITH NUDGE-STYLE HANDS.

Date: Circa 1780's
Movement: Cylinder, signed by Benjamin Gray and Justin Vulliamy, London
Dial: Cream, black Roman numerals, black outer minute division, blued nudge-style hands
Case: Silver, bullseye glass, N. XIR
Outer case size: 40mm

Benjamin Gray joined Justin Vulliamy in 1752 to start their own business at 74 Pall Mall where the next three generations of their families carried out their business.


On March 1742 Benjamin Gray was appointed Watchmaker in Ordinary by King George II as in place of Thomas Cartwright. Also, Gray was the first watchmaker in England to make pedometers. Famous for his craftsmanship he always signed his watches but instead of numbering them, he had a special code system of lettering to give a sequence number.
