Religion Interest.- Incl. Cardinal Newman

Selection of letters by prominent 19th century religious figures, comprising: John Henry Newman (five autograph letters, discussing various matters, one sending to Mrs De Burgh "a small volume of verses", 13 December 1867; another thanking Mrs De Burgh for "a photograph of Eva. It is a simple fact that she has grown very like you. I shall make so good a photograph as she does. I send you two, one for you and one for Eva", 15 December 1867, with a ticket admitting "Miss Thomas and Sister" to the Grounds at Rednall, signed by Newman); Henry Edward Manning (eight autograph letters, mostly to unknown recipients, including: one declining an invitation to preach at St Leonard's Shoreditch "for though I am thank God, well enough for my necessary work, I am obliged to restrict myself to it as much as possible and my duties have make it difficult to leave home", Lavington, 7 February 1849; one to Cardinal Casolane in Malta saying "By the assistance of two friends and my nephew, I am able to provide £4,000 to be put in trust for the endorsement of the Congregation. And if your Lordship were willing to give effect to what you kindly proposed, in any way you see fit, I should feel myself very grateful...You will be glad to know that we are increasing fast in numbers by the addition of six excellent young subjects, and others are coming", browning, tear to upper margin, 7 March 1861; another letter reporting that "I have great anxiety about our future. Our upper classes have ceased to govern, Parliament repulses them; it is under the sway of capital invested in drink, the revenue depends on the increasing consumption of beer and spirits and the domestic life of our working classes is being undermined", 7 May 1873); Nicholas Wiseman (autograph letter signed, in Italian, thanking the recipient for a copy of the new edition of the New Testament and saying that he has shown the Pope his own copy, which was gratefully received by the Holy Father, the letter affected by some toning and occasional losses and tears, 9 March 1830); John Keble (autograph letter to Bishop Rynn, saying that "parish work will prevent me" from meeting the recipient and adding "I shall take it as a great favour if you will offer 10s for me at the Church collection", 5 February 1845; with another letter to a Miss Meyrick, 16 February 1858); all letters but one have been pasted onto large pages originally part of a now dismembered album (7)
