AN OFFICIAL INDIAN SILVER SEAL
Possibly Delhi, Northern India, dated 1815
The brass seal plate of typical oval shape, encased within a tapering conical silver grip, the flowing nasta'liq inscription laid out on three overlapping horizontal lines, the Gregorian calendar date 1815 engraved on the top left, attached to a later silver chain, the seal plate 3.5cm x 2.6cm, the grip 5.5cm high.
The inscription reads John Lipton Sloane ('as-saleen') Sahib Bahadur and the Christian year 1815. Sahib Bahadur was an Indian honorific title widely used during British rule in India.
