The Geneva Seal ( Poinçon de Genève / Genfer Siegel) is the official seal of the City and Canton of Geneva and since 1886 and it has been applied to watches under the authority of the Geneva Laboratory of Horology and Micro-engineering (now called TimeLab) as recognition of the quality of a particular watch. The Geneva Seal is a voluntary standard for watchmakers and when applied is a way of assaying the superiority of Genevan watchmaking, carrying with it assurances of provenance, quality craftsmanship and reliability
A watch approved to be stamped with the Geneva Seal by the Office for the Voluntary Inspection of Watches from Geneva (part of the Geneva Laboratory of Horology and Microengineering) has to be a work of art and not just an instrument to measure time. For the Geneva Seal to be applied to a watch one of the Office’s inspectors has to be satisfied that the mechanism has to met high standards and has fulfilled several different sets of requirements.
