A DOUBLE-SIDED LACQUERED AND GILT CHESS AND BACKGAMMON BOARD
Kashmir, Northern India, 19th century
Of square shape, folding in two equal halves, both sides polychrome painted, gilt and lacquered, the decoration consisting of oval cartouches filled with colourful floral sprays around the edges, roundels of gilt vegetal sprays in the black and white chequered board, beaded bands alternating with rosette sprays and two panels with dense boteh leaves amidst rosettes and interlocking arabesque patterns in the typical Kashmiri style in the backgammon board, a small old inventory sticker taped onto the board reading '1452', 27.5cm x 27cm (open).
Two similar Kashmiri double-sided gaming boards were successfully sold in these Rooms, on 29 October 2020, lot 306; and on 16 July 2021, lot 375.
