A MOULD-BLOWN LIGHT GREEN GLASS JUG WITH THUMB REST
Possibly Iraq or Iran, 9th - 11th century
Of pyriform shape, resting on a thick circular foot, rising to narrow shoulders and a wide conical neck, with a slender handle terminating in a protruding thumb rest on one side, the body enhanced with a moulded decorative band in relief with alternating heart-shaped palmettes and foliage, 14cm high.
The David Collection in Copenhagen has a good repertoire of similar examples to the present lot, each one attributed to 9th and 10th-century Iraq or Iran and featuring the characteristic protruding spiky thumb rest on top of their handles.
