Note: Chinese scholars would adorn their studies with various objects and works art, ranging from ink and colour paintings on silk to small rocks displayed on carved wood stands. The scholar-officials amassed private collections of ancient works, and were particularly associated with the Four Accomplishments: painting, poetry, the game of strategy known as weiqi, and playing the zither (qin). Scholar’s objects were not solely functional objects, but also conveyed symbolic meaning. Small scholar’s rocks, jade figures, carved bamboo and miniature objects would inspire the scholars, whilst also exhibiting a sense of humour.
