A FRAMED TURQUOISE AND COBALT BLUE MULTAN POTTERY TILE WITH PARROTS
Sindh, Pakistan, 20th century
Of square shape, painted in turquoise and cobalt blue on a white ground, with a pair of parrots perched together on a fountain, their beaks touching, the fountain basins with pairs of fish reminiscent of the mahi-ye maratib motif in Lucknow, to either side of the fountain base stems of carnations, irises, tulips, hyacinths and saz leaves, two deer (or possibly fawns) resting amidst the vegetal motif, mounted and framed, 33.5cm x 33.8cm.
The motif on this tile is repeating a well-known composition, most likely originating from Damascus, Syria, as evident in the Syrian tile panel on the south wall of The Arab Hall at the Leighton House Museum, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, London.
