A cased George III sterling silver cased open face compass, London 1787 by James Long (reg. 17th November 1785)
Circular form with a post and opposable loop. Enamel dial signed Jas Long Royal Exchange London. Transit lock. The case back fully marked, maker’s mark I.L (Grimwade 1478). Housed in original velvet lines shagreen case.
Length – 5.9 cm / 2.3 inches
James Long (d. November 1811) was apprenticed to Edward Nairne in 1769. He is listed as working from various addresses including the North Gate at the Royal Exchange, but used the address Royal Exchange, London between the dates 1781-1811.
