Iran, late 19th century
Of rectangular shape, resting on a plain flat base, the exterior presenting a worn micro-mosaic khatam inlay with triangular pieces of bone, steel, ivory, stained wood, and Verdigris-stained bone, worked in star-burst shapes to cover top, sides and edges, the lid hinged, the interior filled with differently sized compartments, several compartments covered with a khatamkari lid, others open and filled with calligrapher's tools, 13.5cm x 43cm x 28.5cm.
