VERNER PANTON (BORN 1926) An early No.276 'S' chair, designed 1966, with continuous moulded and laminated white lacquered plywood, produced circa 1968 by August Sommer for Thonet, Footnote: Verner Panton (Danish 1926-1988) is considered one of Denmark's most influential furniture and interior designers of the 20th century. During his career he created many innovative designs using plywood and plastic, pushing the boundaries of furniture making in the process. Both the No.275 'S' chair and its sister design, No.276, were a re-imagining of the 1934 'Zig-zag' chair by Gererd Reitveld utilising the structural properties of the modern materials of the time. Many of Panton's most well-known furniture models are still in production today, manufactured by Vitra. Literature: Verner Panton, The Complete Works, Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein, 2000, p.249
