Narayan Shridhar Bendre was one of the most prominent Southern Asian painters who played a significant role in the development of modern Southern Asian art. Bendre's influence can be seen in his unique style, which blended traditional art forms with modernist techniques and ideas. He was a member of the Bombay Progressive Artists' Group, which was formed in the 1940s and aimed to create a new visual language that would reflect the changing social and political realities. Bendre's work reflected this goal, incorporating elements of mythology and folklore, as well as a focus on rural life and the natural world.

Bendre was also a pioneer in the use of new materials and techniques in art. He experimented with a variety of media, including oil, watercolour, and gouache, and was known for his use of bold colours and dynamic compositions. His work had a significant influence on the development of South Asian modernism, inspiring many other artists to experiment with new materials and techniques.
