Bears label verso: This painting depicts the south end of Ormskirk, twelve miles northeast of Liverpool. The right fork of the road leads to Aughton and Liverpool, the left to Kirkby and Knowsly. The church is a Roman Catholic one, staffed by Benedictines, and the building seen end on was their school. The chimney marks a brickworks, and the windmill (Aughton Mill) was pulled down some years ago.
