THREE COPPER AND SILVER-INLAID TANJORE TRAYS
Thanjavur (Tanjore), Tamil Nadu, South India, 19th - 20th century
Each of circular shape, with reinforced rim and shallow centres, enhanced with concentric bands of figural and vegetal motifs, the central medallion of the largest tray decorated with Shiva and Uma's wedding scene, the couple flanked by a rishi and the Hindu God Vishnu, and showered with blessings by two angels at the top, 39.5cm diam.; another similar tray with Lord Krishna playing the flute next to a cow, 31cm diam.; and the smallest tray with a standing icon of the Hindu God Vishnu flanked by two attendants and an elephant, possibly a reference to Indra's elephant Airavata, 29.5cm diam.
