AN IMPRESSIVE LOBMEYR ENAMELLED AND GILT CLEAR GLASS VASE

AN IMPRESSIVE LOBMEYR ENAMELLED AND GILT CLEAR GLASS VASE Vienna, Austria, last quarter 19th century Of amphora-like shape, resting on a circular base, rising to wide globular shoulders and a cylindrical neck with slightly everted rim, the body fully enamelled in the hues of white, burgundy red, light blue and gold, the decoration consisting of stylised vegetal tendrils sprouting into leafy arabesques and rosette roundels, interspersed by lines of white beading and three rows of moulded buttons coloured in burgundy red, the maker's mark in white enamel on one of the panels around the foot, 38.2cm high. Similarly to the pottery industry, European glass makers were heavily influenced by the motifs the luxury goods from the Middle East and Persia brought into the West. Lobmeyr, in particular, produced several series in Vienna inspired by the shapes and designs of the East (e.g. the Persian and Mamluk-revival series). This vase is a valuable witness of the mutual influence and fluid conversation which were taking place between the West and the Middle East in the late 19th century.
