A George II Scottish provincial silver waiter / teapot stand, Aberdeen circa 1735 by George Cooper (active 1728-58)
Shaped square form with moulded rim, raised on four pad feet. Initialled to the underside in contemporary Scottish style script J : A over E : G. Marked in each corner, twice GC, three towers and a letter, possibly a V.
Length (side to side) - 15cm / 5.9 inches
Length (corner to corner) - 19cm / 7.5 inches
Weight – 202 grams / 6.5 ozt
The initials are likely to refer to James Abercromby and Elizabeth Gordon who were married on the 7th June 1756 at Saint Nicholas, Aberdeen.. James was a merchant in Aberdeen. This stand would likely have been gifted from the previous generation as the square form was popular in the 1720s and 30s.
