Charles was the son of Mr. Charles Smith and uncle of Miss Mallet of Osborne Place. The miniature was left to Mrs. Johnston and at her death to be returned to Mrs. Fowler, Living at Upper Clapton, Master Smith's sister. The palm trees evident in the background may provide a clue to the location where this miniature was executed.
