A NIELLOED PARCEL-GILT GUNPOWDER CARTRIDGE CASE (PALASKA) WITH FLORAL DECORATION
Greece or Balkans, Western Ottoman Provinces, late 18th - 19th century
Of typical cusped shape, with a convex hinged lid at the top surmounted by an openwork gilt plaque with a pair of facing dragons and a mythological mask in the centre, reminiscent of the Greek God of Wind, Aeolus, the front, sides, and lid embellished with fine niello decoration including typical Ottoman motifs of the period like cornucopias (Horn of Plenty), rosettes, vegetal sprays, curved festoons and palmettes, the back with a rectangular belt loop engraved with a rosette in the centre, the edges of the back engraved with a vegetal band, 12.5cm x 10cm, 373gr.
