Illustrated Account of the Manufacture of Mechanical Clocks, written by Xu Chaojun in ca.1790 - 1810, published in four parts over the period 1805 - 1810, block printed on rice paper, all four volumes bound in a cloth case,

Note: the present lot is a 'first edition such', with successive editions printed several years later. Xu Chaojun details his interest in the art and science of clockmaking from an early age in the preface of this work, and came from a long line of craftsmen producing clocks and watches in the European style, spanning five generations. This manual is detailed and well-illustrated, with various types of specialised gear wheels and escapements, and also includes a European clock face together with annotations naming the Chinese equivalents.
