A CHINESE POTTERY MODEL OF A SADDLED HORSE

A CHINESE POTTERY MODEL OF A SADDLED HORSE, WESTERN JIN DYNASTY, standing four-square, with a stalky body and a stylised foretop, a saddle on his back, 40cm long.

The Western Jin pottery horses tend to be modelled on the stocky and short-legged Mongolian breed, unlike their more graceful Han predecessors. These figures were made in two parts then joined together, with details such as the tail, mane and the saddle applied later. For a similar example see a sculpture from the Birmingham Museum of Art, accession no 1979.321.
