Thanjavur (Tanjore), Tamil Nadu, South India, late 19th - 20th century

Of typical tapering tubular shape, the rounded pommel engraved with a lotus flower in the centre and a fretwork band around the rim, opening to one side as a snuffbox, the silver panels coarsely engraved with floral motifs and geometric bands, interspersed with rounded ivory decorative elements, once polychrome painted, 52cm long.
