A Rare Ives Stereo Kromogram. Circa 1898. Set #5049 featuring a close-up image of butterflies. Fredrick Ives invented this early colour process which used three images, simultaneously shot through red, green and blue filters and combined to give a full-colour positive. Slight chip to extreme edge of one slide, otherwise signs of normal use.
These 3-layer stereo images were designed to be viewed in a Ives Kromskop. Both mono and stereo Ives cameras and viewers were produced, with stereo Kromogram images being particularly rare.
