TWO LARGE OTTOMAN WALL HANGINGS
Ottoman Provinces, late 19th century
Comprising a hanging with green silk ground appliqued with red and silk panels, the entire hanging worked in metallic thread with braided and chain-stitched details with a concentric design, the central tughra within a circular lobed white flower bearing Arif in the petals, the red ground with flowers and pseudo-calligraphic motifs, the four corners with further tughras, featuring the Ottoman emblem of the star and crescent moon, edged with metal thread passementerie, on white gauze, with hanging hooks to the back, 277cm x 194cm; and another, smaller, the silk ground appliqued and heavily worked in metallic threads in a variety of techniques and chain-stitched low-lights, with a flowering urn beneath a lantern and a tughra-bearing arch flanked by columns, the border of joined elongated cartouches in alternating red and gold, in-filled with pseudo-calligraphic inscriptions, edged with metallic thread braid, laid on pale pink cotton, 179cm x 120cm.
