A YEMENI JAMBIYA WITH ORIGINAL BELT. South Arabia, late 19th/early 20th century. Of traditional shape, with a curved double-edged polished steel tapering blade, with waisted horn grip ornate with nails decorative design and two applied imitation coins, the sheath densely decorated with calligraphic bands on the sides and geometric and floral motifs to the centre, the belt worked in cotton and metal thread with a central band of golden interlocking vegetal tendrils on black ground and two continuous floral scrolls on the sides on burgundy ground, 108cm x 9.8cm the belt and 37cm high the blade. Provenance: diplomatic gift to the present owner in 1974. Footnotes: A very similar example was successfully sold at Christie's King Street, 10 October 2006, Lot 157.
