A NORWICH EMBROIDERED KASHMIRI-STYLE MOON SHAWL AND A YAZD BLUE TERMEH PRAYER MAT
Norwich, England and Yazd, Iran, late 19th - early 20th century
Comprising two textiles, the Norwich shawl with an ivory wool ground finely Jacquard-woven in polychromes with floral discs against a field invaded by scrolling floral motifs, the borders of meandering floral stems on sinuous red hillocks, edged with later ivory pashmina border, 158cm x 162cm; and the Yazd prayer mat with indigo wool ground brocaded with supplementary pink, white, green, and yellow wefts with small rows of butis in alternating rows, simulating a termeh, the borders segmenting the repeats, edged with yellow silk trim, lined with pale pink cotton, 106cm x 71cm.
