A BURMESE RED AND BLACK LACQUER 'TIGER' BOX

Of rectangular thitta form and decorated using the yun technique in red, yellow and black, the hinged cover with a central circular panel enclosing a prowling tiger and accompanying inscription all set against a ground of leafy scrolls, the border with further inscriptions, the sides decorated with birds alternating between leafy sprays, the base lacquered black and inscribed, the interior lacquered red,

22.9cm long, 8.5cm high

PROVENANCE:

Previously in the collection of a British missionary family residing in Burma in the 1920s-30s;

Collection of Prospect Burma, UK.

The inscriptions on the cover read 'tiger brand' and attribute the box as being the work of the Pagan lacquer maker Saya Kan.
