A BURMESE RED AND BLACK LACQUER 'ELEPHANT' BOX AND COVER

Saya Khin Workshop, Pagan, 19th/20th Century

Of rectangular thitta form and decorated using the yun technique in red, yellow and black, the cover depicting an elephant and a human figure amongst trees, enclosed by a border of leafy stems issuing flowerheads and two panels bearing the inscription 'from the workshop of Saya Khin, Bazaar Quarter, Pagan' in Burmese, the sides decorated with prowling animals amongst shrubbery, the base with a large striding chinthe accompanied by a signature,
