A STUDY OF A LOCUST, A GRASSHOPPER, AND A CATERPILLAR
PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE AMERICAN COLLECTION
Company School, possibly Kolkata (Calcutta) or Jangipur, West Bengal, North-Eastern India, 19th century

Opaque pigments and ink on wove paper, presenting a study of three typical Indian insects, namely a Desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria), a Rice grasshopper (Oxya yezoensis), and a brownish-green slug caterpillar (family of the Limacodidae or Eucleidae), the study of the grasshopper repeated twice with both frontal and lateral views, marked 'N13' in sepia ink on the top left corner, with later pencil annotations on the reverse, accompanied by the original Maggs Brothers cataloguing entry (lot 103), 43.3cm x 28cm.

Provenance: purchased at Maggs Brothers Ltd in London in the 1970s.
