A RARE CHINESE SUMMER GAUZE 'DRAGON' ROBE.
Qing Dynasty.
The blue gauze worked with couched gold thread with five-clawed dragons, all amidst lingzhi-shaped clouds interspersed with 'precious objects'. The whole is set above a terrestrial diagram and lishui stripe separated by further clouds, and with similar decoration repeated on the border, collar and cuffs, 209cm across, 137cm H
Provenance: from the collection of Sheila Rosevear Urquhart (1908 – 1992), thence by descent to the present owner. The memoires are published as Sheila Unrquhart, 2009, Sons of Heaven and document her time in China from her birth until she moved to Burma with her husband in 1932. They also include her own drawings based on the Chinese art collection she amassed and are a touching portrait of an upbringing immersed in Chinese culture in the early 20th Century.
