First title: Vincenzo Malacarne was professor of medicine, surgery, and obstetrics in Turin, Pavia, and Padua, Italy. He represented a perfect example of an 18th century scholar, combining interests in humanities, sciences, and politics, embodying the ideal of an encyclopaedic and universal culture. Malacarne is considered to be one of the founders of surgical anatomy. He made important contributions in anatomy and surgery, teratology, obstetrics, neurology, and history of medicine, adopting an interdisciplinary approach based on the correlation between anatomy, surgery, and clinics.
