An early 20th century Iraqi silver and niello tobacco jar or tea caddy, Basra circa 1930-40
Cylindrical form with a pull off domed lid. The lid with a nielloed scene of the Tomb of Ezra with a fisherman in a mashoof in the foreground, the sides nielloed with the Tomb of Hadrat Sheikh Marouf al Karkhi, Baghdad, and dhow sailing boats. Unsigned.
Height – 7.2 cm / 2.9 inches
Weight – 107 grams / 3.44 ozt
Although unsigned with further research it may be possibly to link the detailed architectural work on this box to the children of Zahroon such as Aziz Zahroon.
