Contax III Rangefinder Camera , Marked 'Kriegsmarine-Eigentum MF1303'.

Contax III, Marked 'Kriegsmarine-Eigentum MF1303'. Thought to be a German Kriegsmarine set from U-Boat 1303. Body serial number M371718 with matching number stamped inside removable back. Meter not responding and shutter inoperable with broken tapes etc. Signs of attempted repair with film guide cover removed (included). Fitted with a 5cm f1.5 Sonnar lens #2610554 and engraved MF1499 to edge of aperture ring (which shows slight 'nibbling'). ERC stamped MF1499.

During WWII the German navy (Kriegsmarine) issued a Contax outfit to each of their submarines, with the camera and lens(es) marked MF, followed by the U-boat number. MF was thought to stand for Marine Flieger (Naval Air Arm of the Germany Navy). For details of U-Boat 1303, see https://uboat.net/boats/u1303.htm.
