the wooden cane with horn handle carved with inscription 'Boer Prisoners of War St Helena 1901,

91cm long

From 1900 the island of St Helena was used to house prisoners captured in South Africa during the Boer War (1899-1902). Boer prisoners numbered about 5000 in total. Since the period of incarceration was only two years and the prisoner numbers limited, prisoner of war art from this period is rare.
