Clarkson Frederick Stanfield visited Northern Ireland and the Giant's Causeway once in September/October 1856. It was his last distant tour out of mainland Britain. He painted an oil of The Stack Rock, County Antrim, 1861, Ulster Museum, Belfast. The present watercolour may be by an admirer who may have been inspired by this painting and depicts another view of the basalt columns in County Antrim on the North Coast of Northern Ireland which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Great Laxey Wheel or Lady Isabella (as she is also known), is the largest surviving working waterwheel in the world. Designed by Victorian engineer Robert Casement it was built in 1854 to pump water from the Laxey mines.
