A pair of George III sterling silver candlesticks, London 1794 by John Scofield (reg. 13th Jan 1778)

Of circular section, with tapering cylindrical stems, vase-shaped capitals and detachable nozzles, with fluted decoration and reeded rims. The bases engraved with an impaled coat of arms, the sconces engraved with a crest of a griffin stantant. Inside of capitals engraved with numerals 2 and 8, sconces with numerals one with engraved numeral 3, the other 6. Each fully marked to footrim, part-marked to sconces. (2)

The arms are for Wentworth impaling Hawkesworth

For Godfrey Wentworth Wentworth (1773-1834) who married Amelia Hawkesworth (d.1834) on the 12th May 1794. Godfrey of Woolley Hall, near Wakefield in the County of Yorkshire the third son of Sir George Armytage (1734-1783), the 3rd Baronet of Kirklees in the County of Yorkshire and his wife, Anna Maria Wentworth (1736-1788). Godfrey was born Godfrey Wentworth Armytage. He assumed the surname and arms of Wentworth by Sign Manual on the 10th March 1789 upon the succession to his maternal grandfather’s estate. Amelia was the daughter of Walter Ramsden Beaumont Hawkesworth (later Fawkes) (1746-1792) and Amelia Farrer (d. after 1770), of Hawkesworth Hall and of Farnley Hall, near Otley all in the same county. Godfrey succeeded his grandfather, another Godfrey Wentworth in the family’s estate at Woolley upon the latter’s death on the 18th January 1789. Godfrey served as the High Sheriff of Yorkshire for 1796.
