λ SIX CARVED MOTHER-OF-PEARL SHELL PLAQUES WITH CHRISTIAN IMAGERY
Jerusalem, 18th - 19th century
Comprising a large circular and five smaller oval mother-of-pearl plaques, each front carved with Christian religious imagery and icons, the larger plaque depicting the Last Supper and bearing the inscription Cæna Domini to the bottom of the composition, the smaller oval plaques showcasing Mary Magdalene knelt in prayer and the Four Evangelists (Mark, Matthew, John and Luke), each evangelist flanked by his identifying symbol (lion, winged man, eagle and ox), the large shell 16cm x 15.5cm and the smaller plaques 4cm x 3.5cm.
